Sclerotherapy is firmly established as the quickest and most effective routine treatment for unsightly thread veins and broken veins. A chemical, solution is injected into the veins that gradually causes it to disappear. It is pain-free and permanent. Sclerotherapy is a proven procedure that has been in use since the 1930s.
Thread veins or spider veins are small dilated blood vessels that appear near the surface of the skin, measuring between 0.5 and 1 mm in diameter unlike varicose veins that are deeper. They are often red or blue in colour and can be extremely embarrassing. Leg veins usually appear on the thighs and ankles. Facial thread veins generally appear on the nose, chin or cheek area and often occur in Rosacea redness. They are smaller surface based veins. They are often red or blue and are closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins. They usually appear on the thighs and ankles. Facial thread veins generally appear on the nose, chin or cheek area and often occur in Rosacea redness.
Thread veins are extremely common and sometimes embarrassing, mostly affecting the face, body and legs. The causes of thread veins are unknown although they may be caused by changes in temperature, smoking, hormonal changes, alcohol and prolonged standing as well as being a possible inherited condition.
Sclerotherapy is a treatment that does not involve laser or IPL. It is also effective in removing thread veins from the body and legs – this is a relatively simple non surgical treatment which only takes 30-40 minutes. A very fine needle is used to inject a solution into the vein, which causes it to perish and, over a course of treatments, disappear completely.
Prior to your treatment you will have a consultation with a Registered nurse who will answer all your questions and you are assessed for your suitability to proceed.
The number of treatment sessions depends on how many areas need to be treated but we generally recommend on average 4 treatments.
We would recommend allowing between 30 – 40 minutes per treatment (however this will depend on the size of the area to be treated. We recommend four to six weeks between each of your treatments
Expect mild redness and swelling to the areas which have been treated. Wearing of support tights will provide support if treatment is carried out on the legs.
This is very individual and in most cases the same veins will not reoccur. New veins can appear in other areas of your body which might require treatment.
You will be supplied with support tights for treatment on the legs; these would need to be worn for 10-14 days.
Some patients see changes taking place after only one session. Normally about three weeks after the treatment fading begins to occur and the finer thread veins will tend to disappear. It is however, extremely important for you to continue with your treatment until the thread veins have completely faded to achieve the greatest results.
